Scotts Valley, CA - The American
Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP) today joined with the
other founding members of the HerbDay™ Coalition to call on the natural
products industry and all those interested in the use
of herbs to celebrate HerbDay™ on Saturday, October
14, 2006. From October 12 to 15, those interested in
highlighting the importance of herbs will be able to
participate in a series of nationwide educational events
that will culminate in a national event at the National
Botanical Gardens in Washington, DC.
HerbDay was developed by a key coalition of non-profit
organizations that will play a key role in promoting
this event in conjunction with the natural products
industry, including: American Herbal Pharmacopoeia,
American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), American
Herbalist Guild (AHG), American Botanical Council (ABC)
and United Plant Savers (UPS).
Each of these organizations will either spearhead
or help organize a variety of public events, such as
lectures, herb walks, book signings and other promotional
opportunities featuring academicians, industry leaders
and elected officials who share a common commitment
to educate everyone on the responsible use and benefits
of herbs.
Through the formation of HerbDay, the coalition founders
intend to:
- Promote the responsible
use and benefits of botanicals in health care,
- Create a forum for individual retailers and retail
chains, schools of herbal medicine and botanical,
centers to develop local herb events that will stimulate
local interest in herb use
- Conduct political outreach
to educate members of Congress about the appropriate
use of herbs, and
- Launch a national event in Washington,
DC that serves as a rallying point for all those
interested in herbs.
Members of the herbal community are invited to plan
events, provide sponsorship or contribute financial
support. The HerbDay website (www.herbday.org) will
provide guidance on how to sponsor or host an event
as well as a way to register your event to spread the
word about future events. The coalition founders intend
to hold this event annually to continue to educate
consumers about the benefits of herbs in human health
care. Ultimately, it is the hope of the HerbDay Coalition
that HerbDay will go international.

About AHP: AHP (www.herbal-ahp.org),
founded in Santa Cruz, California, began developing
qualitative and therapeutic monographs in 1994. The
Mission of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia® (AHP)
is to promote the responsible use of herbal medicines
and insure they are used with the highest degree
of safety and efficacy as is achievable. Their primary
way to accomplish this is through the development
of standards of identity, purity, and analysis for
botanicals, as well as to critically review traditional
and scientific data regarding their efficacy and
safety. |
