AHP Introduces New Quality Botanical Macroscopy Profile™

First-of-Its-Kind Authoritative Guide Features 11 Species at Special Introductory Price

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP) today announced the availability of its new AHP Quality Botanical Macroscopy Profile™. This authoritative guide features the first eleven samples to provide reliable reports on key botanical materials that are used as ingredients in herbal products.

The AHP Quality Botanical Macroscopy Profile™ addresses the basic identity of a botanical as well as known substitutes and closely related species. These new macroscopic resources also provide valuable information so that manufacturers can identify plant materials to ensure authenticity of raw material, determine relative quality, compare botanical grades, and increase compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP).

"Our goal is to continually generate new, comprehensive resources that meet the unique needs of all those interested in botanical quality, especially herbal product manufacturers, cultivators, processors, suppliers of herbal raw material, researchers and herbal wildcrafters," according Roy Upton, AHP executive director. "The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia is uniquely qualified to provide this essential tool for the herbal trade."

Upton noted that these new macroscopic resources have unique attributes. First, macroscopic descriptions and images are derived from accurately authenticated materials. In addition, these comprehensive resources address adulterants and closely related species, while also providing key information on quality and purity. New macroscopy images include:

  • Astragalus
  • Chaste Tree
  • Cranberry
  • Dang gui
  • Echinacea purpurea
  • Feverfew
  • Goldenseal
  • Skullcap
  • Teucrium
  • Uva-ursi
  • Valerian

AHP is offering eleven samples at a special introductory price of $35 each, and these can be accessed at http://www.herbal-ahp.org .

"AHP has worked closely with AHPA and its committees in developing these reference tools that are germane and easily usable by herbal product manufacturers," said Michael McGuffin, who is president of the American Herbal Products Association and an AHP board member. "Every AHPA member should take the time to consider the value of this new AHP product to their herbal procurement procedures."
