Roy Upton, Herbalist, DAy
Roy Upton, RH, DAy has been working and practicing professionally as an herbalist since 1981. Trained in ayurvedic, Chinese, and western herbal medicine traditions Roy is the founder, executive director, and editor of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, is a co-founder, past president, and vice-president of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG), and serves on the Committee of Revision for the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and botanical expert advisory committees of AOAC International, the American Botanical Council, and NSF International. Roy is also visiting faculty for the Master of Science in Herbal Medicine program at Tai Sophia, Laurel, MD and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Program at the University of Southern California, School of Pharmacy, Los Angeles, CA. In addition Roy is the staff herbalist for the California-based herbal supplements company, Planetary Herbals, is a member of the Standards Committee of the American Herbal Products Association, and is an internationally recognized lecturer and author of numerous popular and peer-reviewed scientific publications.
John Cardellina II, PhD

Dr. Cardellina received a BS in chemistry and a BA in Russian from Pennsylvania State University and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. Since that time, John has had a distinguished career serving as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Montana State University, a Supervisory Research Chemist and Senior Investigator at the National Cancer Institute, an Associate Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Maryland Center of Marine Biotechnology, and currently serves as a medicinal chemist at the US Army Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, Frederick, MD, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Hood College, Frederick, MD.
In addition to these academic posts, John has served as Vice President of Botanical Science & Regulatory Affairs for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, Washington, DC and is a Health Sciences Administrator for the Office of Dietary Supplements, NIH, Rockville, MD. John has authored or co-authored more than 190 scientific papers on various aspects of natural products chemistry and has served as the President of the American Society of Pharmacognosy.
Staci Eisner, VP Quality, Regulatory Affairs
Cortex Scientific Botanicals, Inc.
Staci Eisner serves as the Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs for Cortex Scientific Botanicals, Inc., and is responsible for all aspects of quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Previously, Staci has served in management positions in phyto- pharmaceutical, solid oral dosage, and fishery product manufacturing and distribution operations. In these positions her responsibilities have included quality control, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and research and development.
Staci is an outspoken advocate of improving the quality standards in the herbal / dietary supplement industry. She serves as the Vice Chairman of the NSF/ANSI Dietary Supplement Joint Task Force for development of dietary supplement certification standards. Previously, she was a representative to the Institute for Nutraceutical Advancement’s Methods Validation Program, a consortium of industry members working together to validate analytical methods for botanicals.
Staci has also served for many years as an elected trustee for the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA). In this capacity she has pressed for more stringent quality standards in the industry while also exploring creative ways to ensure the continued viability of small businesses in the industry. She also chairs the AHPA government relations committee, and in previous years chaired an AHPA subcommittee focusing on definitions, manufacturing processes, quality standards, and labeling for herbal extracts. She has served as the author or managing editor of several guidance documents on the manufacture of botanical extracts, standardization, the use of marker compounds, good documentation practices, and shelf life dating.
Staci received her B.S. in 1992 from Cornell University, with majors in both chemistry and biology. She graduated with high honors.

Michael McGuffin is President of the American Herbal Products Association. He has been active in the herbal industry since 1975, having owned and managed both retail and manufacturing businesses in this field. He is the Managing Editor of Botanical Safety Handbook (1997) and of Herbs of Commerce, 2nd edition (2000). He also serves as a Director of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia®, as a Board member of United Plant Savers and of the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance, and as Chair of the Industry Committee of the Plant Conservation Alliance / Medicinal Plants Working Group.
Joseph Pizzorno, ND
Dr. Joseph E, Pizzorno, Jr., ND is the founding President Emeritus of Bastyr University for Natural Health Sciences in Seattle, Washington, the first fully accredited university for natural medicine in the United States. Dr. Pizzorno, serving on various government committees, the Scientific Review Board for Gateway for Cancer Research, as well as authoring Total Wellness, co-authoring the Encyclopedia of Natural Healing, the Textbook of Natural Medicine and Natural Medicine for the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer, and being the founding editor of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal, is one of the world’s leading authorities on science-based natural medicine. He has been recognized as one of the most influential leaders in alternative health care (Alternative Healthcare Management, 2000), as the “Humanitarian of the Year” (Cancer Treatment Centers of America, 2001), the “Naturopathic Physician of the Year” (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, 2002), “Founder’s Award for Pioneering Complementary and Alternative Medicine” (National Foundation for Alternative Medicine, 2002), and the Linus Pauling award (Institute for Functional Medicine, 2004). At present Dr. Pizzorno is the Founder and CEO of Salu-GeneeistsEditor-in-Chief of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal (IMCJ).

Cathirose Petrone MA CNC is an AANC board certified nutritional consultant and the founder and director
of Living Health Institute in San Diego,
California. She is the author of the book Mindfulnes and Healing: a Clinician's Guide.
